If the hard drive it attempts to boot from is NOT bootable, the bios will NOT attempt to boot from another hard drive.- if you have two hard drives, both SATA, I would also try removing one of the suspect drives and try and run the hdd manufactures diag tools from a bootable floppy. I think it is the battery because when i turn the computer off without plugging out, it doesn't happen!
